The Blame Game

A manifesto for a better future

Personal Responsibility, as opposed to the other kind of PR, is something you do for you instead of something you do depending on how others will perceive it. It seems like as time progresses and bigger issues emerge people somehow find a scapegoat to blame. People say, “Everything happens for a reason”, well if that’s true, why should I care if it’ll all end up the same in the end no matter what I do? Scarily, that’s the rationality of some. We need to own up to our decisions and actions and do what we can to make the world a better place.

I always hear about these random acts of violence blamed on video games. What I want to know is how these people can’t separate their games and real life. I’ve got to admit that I’m an avid Grand Theft Auto player myself but, I’d never do any of that stuff in real life. It’s a made up story in which you are pretending to lead a life of crime.

However, I have a conscience and would never even think of actually doing these things or committing those crimes. Video games can be a great release in that sense—if you’ve always wanted to bungee jump but didn’t have the guts, there’s a game for that. It’s not the video game’s fault that someone does something irrational, it’s completely their fault.

Why blame the media for the current generation? Sure, they may play a big role in what our kids act like but, in the end, the kids make their own decisions. Some may say, “They are too young to know better”, well that may be so but they still make their decisions and as they grow older they should be able to realize their mistakes and move on. They have young impressionable minds which are exactly what the media wants because they are easy targets for their ads.

Taking responsibility doesn’t always have to go hand in hand with bad things. If you do something really well you can take pride in knowing that “it was all you”. If everything happens for a reason, was it really you who achieved this task or, was it predetermined that you would succeed? By taking responsibility you usually avoid conflict. If everyone took responsibility for their mistakes and deeds then I’m sure the world would be a much better of a place.
