Have you ever looked around yourself and saw conflicts you could resolve? Perhaps you’ve looked internationally at world issues whose solutions remain elusive. The Model UN team takes an in-depth look at the world around us through research and emulations of the United Nations.

Heard of the United Nations? It is an international organization focused on resolving world conflicts and issues ranging from potential nuclear war to the dive-bombing economy. As much as the world stage seems beyond the reach of lowly high school students, high schools and universities have come up with a solution to this burgeoning problem – Model UN.

The Model UN club at Bell is a new student initiative introduced this year by Eric Wu and Sherry Chu. Students are charged with researching specific countries and their countries’ stances on key issues.

After preparing resolution papers on individual issues, members discuss and debate their papers, hopefully arriving at amendments or conclusions.

The culminating event for all Model UN teams is the conference. MUN teams flock to conferences where they participate in emulated United Nations functions.

Countries on smaller committees, such as the European Union or African Union hold meetings in the days leading up to the General Assembly. At the General

Assembly itself, items on the official UN agenda are discussed, including the war in Darfur, and the Congo conflicts.

However, MUN can also take its delegates back in time with its special Historical General Assembly. This year brings us back to the Second World War. Students representing the key countries of the time must come up with solutions to the same historical problems faced by the past world leaders. Maybe you could have come up with a better answer!

All in all, Model UN is a club for those of you who are internationally aware, and interested in solving the world’s problems! While the conferences Come to our meetings on Day Twos (either Tuesday or Wednesday) in Room 204. See you there!
