Finally, the winter holidays are almost here. It’s now, right before the break, that smart students should plan their break accordingly, to avoid any regrets and guilty consciences come January. Here are some suggestions for your winter holidays.

1. Catch up on sleep. Nearing the end of the semester, the assignments, quizzes and tests are starting to pile up. Many students are not getting the sleep they need, often falling asleep in class or not performing as well as they should. Take the holidays as a chance to sleep in, and relax for a while. Get your rest so that you’re not sick at home when the exams come around.

2. Get together with friends. It is the holidays, after all. Have some fun with friends. Spend some quality time getting closer to them outside of school.

3. Do some work. Yes, it’s a pain to be doing work while on holiday, but think of all the stress you will be under if you leave it all to last minute. It’s not going to take up all of your time, just a couple of hours today and a couple of minutes tomorrow. You don’t have to finish all the work, but you know there’s only going to be more work piling up later. Work on summatives. Start reading some of those notes from the beginning of the semester. You’ll be the one laughing when everyone else is exhausted form staying up all night.

Bored during the holidays? Here are some ideas you can try out.

1. Enter a contest that you normally don’t have time to do. For example, the Children’s Literature Contest at Bell, or the Young at Art contest that City of Ottawa hosts every year.

2. Go outside and play in the snow. Build a snowman. Make a snow angel. Have a snow ball fight. Or, better yet, have a toboggan party with your friends. Playing in the snow will never be boring.

3. Bake or cook something . It doesn’t matter if you’ve never cooked before. It’s fun to just find a recipe, and make something delicious. Or, if you’re brave, experiment.

4. Write something creative. Writing is a great way to pass the time, and do something cool. Wish all your friends and family a happy holidays. Who knows, you may get in touch with one of your old friends, and have a wonderful time together!
