The Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, was first turned on on September 10, 2008. It is the largest particle accelerator in the world, spanning 27 kilometers in diameter. It is the fruit of 300 billion Euros, as well as twenty-five years of hard labour. On October 21, the first beams of fully accelerated photons will rush around the entire track, and collide at 99.999999% of the speed of light. They will crash together and scientists will search for the “God Particle”, which scientists believe that is the building block of all matter.
However, they may find some things that they were not looking for.
Scientists may find that they created micro black holes, which, if they do not decay in time, will suck in all of the matter on Earth. Or, they may find themselves with some “strangelets”, a more stable form of matter, and when it touches regular matter, it transforms the matter into more strangelets, causing the “grey goo” scenario to form. Although many scientists believe that these scenarios will not happen, a few disagree, saying that the LHC has a 1 in 50 million chance of destroying the Earth.
So go outside, wear sandwich-boards & start proclaiming the end of the world.
And if the LHC doesn’t end the world, here’s a list of things that might:
December 21, 2012: End of the long count calendar
30-100 years: Superior computer intelligence
that render humans obsolete.
0-200 years: Yellowstone caldera eruption
0-2 million years: Large meteor crashes into Earth.
So, have fun!
