Anime North: What, When, Where and How

By Kevin Armstrong - 2009/12/18 Edition

Traditionally, we take a gander at several school clubs and sports teams, and spread word about the happenings in our clubs. This time, we look at one of the major initiatives being spearheaded by the Anime Club’s conglomeration of high-spirited otaku.

Time, money, and lots and lots of guts are being put into the organization of the club-sanctioned trip to “Anime North” in late-May, an annual anime convention based in Toronto. A lot of freedom is associated with the trip, as you mingle with your fellow enthusiasts, visit panels with the latest and greatest faces in anime today, and check out “The Artist Valley”, a peninsula where independent artists come together to draw in public. There’s also a lot of merchandise to take a poke at. The booked hotel nearby the convention grounds includes a sushi bar for social discussions.

The trip is club-organized and spearheaded by members of the Anime Club, so you’ll have an easy time meeting up with them and discussing what you need for the trip. The enthusiastic members would be glad to help you organize, if you feel you can come around. The trip is expected to cost the individual approximately $300, but costs can (and will) fluctuate, depending on varying factors.

Anime Club will be actively engaged in a number of fundraisers to help gather the funds necessary for the trip, most notably a future movie night featuring a high-quality selection of traditional animations from the masterful Hayao Miyazaki, a filmmaker widely known for pieces such as “Spirited Away” and “Princess Mononoke”, and one who is lovingly compared to the legendary Walt Disney. If you would like more information about the trip to Anime North, there is a variety of sources for information. Anime Club meets every Thursday in Room 205, and new members are always welcome. You may also meet up with some of the key organizers (Julia DeFalco and Sabrina Madore) for a private consultation. Additionally, Anime Club maintains a website with updated information about club activities, as well as Anime North. You can find it at http://bellsanimeclub.wetpaint.com.

Let out your closet otaku and join in the fun! Anyone who has the sheer will to go to the hottest anime convention in Ontario, and the greenbacks to back it up, is welcomed
